Home Organization – 101

I know many of us have spent the last year trying to Marie Kondo ourselves out of a mess, but allow me to chime in. I love Marie Kondo, I think what she does is amazing, however I don’t think everyone is quite at that level. If you are currently disorganized and live a clutter-full life, telling you to suddenly empty the entire contents of your walk-in closet onto your bed is a hard pill to swallow. If it has taken you forever to collect this amount of crap, chances are, you’re not the most motivated to dump it all onto your bed. If you are, by all means, go Kondo the heck out of your room.

Many people, don’t want to dedicate and entire day, week, or month to tackling such a project, so this is my suggestion. Start with a small, manageable space first. An area that you know could really use some attention, but isn’t going to take over your existence. Start with maybe the kitchen junk drawer, the pain in the ass Tupperware cabinet, or your bathroom vanity. Start with whatever space is truly bothering you and becoming really annoying. When you face that, and actually organize it, you’ll feel relieved. You’ll also feel a sense of accomplishment, and feel more motivated to tackling the bigger areas in your home. Chances are, if you don’t start with a small victory and just go straight to dumping everything onto your bed, you’ll not only be overwhelmed, but will be really pissed off when you’re sleeping on the couch for the next 6 weeks.
